The Care Category Series: Apparel, Our Commitment to Longevity

The Care Category Series: Apparel, Our Commitment to Longevity

Our modern wardrobes are remarkably diverse. A single closet might hold structured cotton shirting, delicate wool knitwear, synthetic activewear, vintage denim, and blended fabrics designed for performance and comfort. Despite this material complexity, we clean most of our garments in exactly the same way; washed frequently, with high-intensity detergents, and exposed to heat, agitation, and chemicals that were never designed with fibre longevity in mind. We’re all guilty of this, mostly because we haven’t really known any other way.

This uniform approach to laundry is one of the biggest drivers of clothing degradation; colours fade, fibres weaken, shapes warp, and garments lose their original integrity long before their time. Caring for clothing properly requires recognising different materials behave differently, and the way we clean them should reflect that difference.

At The Lab, we approach apparel care as a systems challenge, and we’ve sought to challenge ourselves in rethinking how we care for our entire wardrobes. We cut our teeth in the sneaker space, and in extending our offering we have adapted our central approach (microbial cleaning and protection) into precise, category-specific formulations that respond to the different biological and material conditions of textiles. Through this process, we have come to deeply understand the potential of biotechnology as the future of fashion care.

Rather than relying on a single, aggressive method of cleaning, we’ve designed adaptable care solutions that respect the biology and structure of fabrics. Our probiotic biotechnology works at a microscopic level to refresh, protect, and gently cleanse garments.

The Hidden Consequence of Over-washing.

We’re challenging the dominant narrative around laundry that equates cleanliness with frequency; in which we feel compelled to wash our clothing after a single wear, often out of habit rather than necessity.

Mechanical agitation, detergent chemicals, and heat all contribute to fibre breakdown. Cotton becomes brittle, wool fibres lose their elasticity, synthetics shed microfibres, and blends gradually lose their structural integrity. Over time, garments fade, shrink, pill, and stretch; because they were cleaned too aggressively and too often.

There is also an environmental cost, with traditional detergents relying on harsh surfactants and chemical agents that can be harmful to waterways and ecosystems. Frequent washing consumes large volumes of water and energy, contributing to the environmental footprint of everyday clothing care.

Our culture of fashion care is rooted in reassessing our over-reliance on constant laundering, and toward methods of maintenance and preservation. In many cases, clothing simply needs to be refreshed rather than fully washed. Odours, bacteria, and surface impurities can often be addressed without subjecting fabrics to the stress of a full wash cycle.

Why Clothing Needs Specialised Care.

Every fibre type carries its own vulnerabilities. Natural fibres such as cotton and wool respond differently to moisture and temperature than synthetics. Blended textiles combine materials that expand, contract, and age at different rates. Structured garments rely on stitching, seams, and finishing processes that can be weakened by repeated exposure to strong detergents.

Specialised care respects these differences. By using probiotic biotechnology rather than soap-based detergents, our apparel care formulas clean and maintain garments at a microscopic level. Beneficial microbes are fibre-responsive, meaning they break down odour-causing compounds and organic residues gently, allowing fabrics to remain fresh without the need for aggressive chemical intervention. The result is clothing that retains its original look and feel for longer. This approach also aligns with a broader shift in how we think about clothing; as beloved objects designed to accompany us over time.

Garments have different needs depending on how they are worn, so we offer two complementary paths to apparel care; Apparel Wash and Apparel Refresh, each designed to play a distinct role in extending the life of your wardrobe.

Our Apparel Refresh is designed for moments when clothing does not require a full wash, but would certainly benefit from renewal. We definitely aren’t suggesting that garments be left to become gross or unclean; rather, we invite you to expand the methods you can rely on for clothing care. Whether after travel, a long day of wear, or light activity, the formula works to eliminate odours and revitalise fabrics without exposing them to the stress of laundering.

Powered by probiotic biotechnology, Apparel Refresh breaks down odour-causing bacteria while helping to maintain the softness and integrity of fibres. The biodegradable formula contains no soap or harsh chemicals, making it gentle on both garments and skin. Once applied, the probiotic action continues working for up to 72 hours, keeping clothing fresh while reducing the need for repeated washing. This simple shift, of refreshing instead of washing, can dramatically extend the lifespan of garments while reducing water and energy use.

When clothing does require deeper cleaning, our Apparel Wash offers a low-impact alternative to traditional detergents, and it works wonders for your most delicate pieces. Formulated without soap or harsh chemicals, Apparel Wash uses probiotic biotechnology to cleanse fabrics while protecting their structure. Again, the formula works at a microscopic level to remove residues and impurities while preserving the softness, elasticity, and colour of garments.

Like Apparel Refresh, its probiotic action continues working for up to 72 hours, maintaining cleanliness beyond the moment of washing. The result is a wash that is effective yet gentle; suitable for everyday clothing, activewear, and even delicate garments that benefit from a more considered approach to care.

Intelligent Methods For Fashion Care.

Apparel care is truly one of the most influential factors in how long clothing lasts. By shifting from aggressive, uniform laundering to specialised care systems that respect textile biology, we can significantly extend the lifespan of the garments we own; and truly practise what we preach, in terms of sustainable fashion practices that are actually self-determining and consistent.

At The Lab, our approach is built on a guiding principle; cleaning should support longevity. Your routine might begin to look a little different, so instead of endless cycles of laundry, your care routines become more considered; refreshes between wears, occasional cold washes or gentle soaks when needed, and ultimately far less frequent laundering overall.

Clothing carries stories of places, movement, creativity, and personal expression. Caring for garments thoughtfully allows those stories to continue unfolding, wear after wear, as you build the wardrobe that truly encompasses the depth of your personal style.
