Enter The Lab Episode 8: Otsile Moumakoe

“ENTER THE LAB” is the content series where we showcase the talented, innovative and expressive individuals within our community.

The aim is to connect with the person in front of the camera beyond just the imagery. The approach is both grand, portraying their personalities and uniqueness in a monumental style, while maintaining a personal element, revealing a side of them that viewers have never seen before.

Otsile Moumakoe is a self-taught visual artist from Pretoria and owner of VTSEK Studios, residing in Cape Town, South Africa.

His art is inspired by fashion, music, movies, history and other aspects of popular culture. This results in art that’s comical, quirky and has a tongue in cheek approach.

OT's journey with visual arts started in my his teens when he used to make rap music and the cover art to go along with it.

The Vtsek Studios Instagram account was started during lockdown in 2020, which aimed at expressing OT's ideas of cross synthesis between different parts of popular culture from both South African and global contexts. Through this distinctive vision, his art invites us to question norms, challenge conventions, embrace the unconventional and to also look back and highlight certain events in history and culture.

ENTER THE LAB

With the creation of VTSEK Studios, OT started referencing things that he liked from South African and Western Pop culture. Namely things that he saw on television and the internet when he was younger that brought back a sense of nostalgia. Through that, he has found a new way to tell old stories in a language that is translated to the current times that we are living in.

Vtsek Studios has gained notoriety across social media, earning earning a place in the Design Indaba Class of 2023, as well as notable features on publications like Hypebeast, Connect Everything Collective, Bubblegum Club and more.
